I know that summer has barely reached its midpoint, and we haven't even played the baseball All-Star game yet, but with the Yankees sucking (playing mostly lackluster ball), and I having attended a cookout where a couple of grade school football coaches were already getting excited about starting practice in a couple weeks, I guess I'm kind of in a football state of mind this morning. For some reason, I got up thinking once again that this Randy Moss to the New England Patriots thing is not going to work out.

With the draft and first rookie mini-camp firmly in the rearview mirror it’s time to take a very preliminary look at the Patriots projected 53 man roster. The NFL is amazing in that most rosters turnover 25-30% of their players every single season.

Football is many things; it’s a delicate balance between pay and performance; it’s forecasting and planning, it’s part military strategy, it’s part psychoanalysis, it often oscillates between emotional highs and lows. The object; in case some of you have forgotten; is to be able to get the ball in the opponents end zone for a Touchdown.

All is not well in Patriot Nation. Or are our expectations simply too high for this team? After all, since the Kraft’s purchased the Patriots back in 1994; all they have done is lead the NFL in most wins (139) playoff wins (13) divisional titles (6) Conference Championships (4) and Super Bowl titles (3)

Everyone please raise their hands the last time they saw an NFL team turn the ball over 4 times in the red zone (five times overall) and still beat one of the best teams in the league. Oh, I think I see a hand in the back, anyone? Bueller?

But after lackluster performances against both Indy and the Jets; where the Patriots looked more like a finesse team, than the one that prides itself on being one of the most physical teams in the league; Belichick apparently had seen enough to know that he needed to get his players attention last week in practice.

Since I do not write for Entertainment Tonight, Hollywood Access or Football Players Wives; I have been steadfast in my approach each and every week in submitting my reports; what happened the previous Sunday? What have we learned? What trends are developing? What might happen the following week? What should Patriots fans be concerned or optimistic about and how far can this 2006 team ultimately go?

Since winning their 3rd Super Bowl in 4 years, the Patriots are 0-5 against the Broncos and Colts and 17-4 vs. the rest of the NFL. What Sunday night proved, amongst other things, was that committing five turnovers, four illegal contact penalties (all on 3rd down, resulting in 1st downs for Indy) and three long kick returns will get you is one big L in the loss column.
