Many Dol-Fans are excited about the promise of newfound offensive efficiency now that the Miami Dolphins have brought Cam Cameron in as Head Coach.  When most fans think of the San Diego offense, they think of LaDainian Tomlinson and Antonio Gates.  But, what does that mean for the Miami offense?  Will Ronnie Brown and Randy McMichael become hot items in your local fantasy football leagues?  What kind of offense does Cameron run?  Below is a detailed study of some important play calling tendencies that have been established by Cameron in San Diego.

Ghost of a Coward Makes the Difference

It appears the Miami Dolphins will name Cam Cameron as the seventh head coach in franchise history at some point today. The Dolphins have expressed a strong interest in having their head coach in place in time for the Senior Bowl, and have spent an alarming amount of time negotiating with Cameron over his three-day visit. According to various fan polls, hiring Cameron may be the most popular move the franchise is faced with, short of hiring Mike Shula (mostly because he is the son of Don). Cam Cameron does have his share of detractors, most of whom point to his failed tenure as head coach of the Indiana Hoosiers from 1997 through 2001. However, the Dolphins have structured the team and this search to a point where, even if Cameron is the second coming of Norv Turner, he stands a fine chance of leading the Dolphins to a lot of victories in 2007. The reason is because of the ghost of a coward, Nick Saban.

One of the most curious trademarks of the Nick Saban era of Miami football is the seemingly-constant need for the team and players to take a step backward before they can move forward again.  The phenomenon plays out on many levels, from the individual player to the team as a whole, from individual games to the season as a whole.

The Miami Dolphins have filed a quarterly report of football progress in order to inform the public of the state of the franchise.  Management regretfully informs the public that the team has missed expectations by a wide margin during the seasonally fast first quarter of the 2006 NFL season.  The report below offers details of the Dolphins' first quarter, and may contain forward-looking statements that are not guaranteed in nature.  Management would like to warn the public of the dangers of high expectations for future quarters, as they have been known to induce vomiting and/or blood loss among those that have observed the team's fortunes during the first quarter of the football season.

Team in Disrepair, Ten Players That Need to Step Up

Many, myself included, thought that the Dolphins would be off to a fast start this season with a favorable schedule and a cast of well-conditioned crew ready to outlast opponents in the September heat.  The team came out with guns drawn and ready for a showdown in Pittsburgh, but were surprised to find that their six-shooters only had five bullets in them.  They attempted to regroup against the Bills for the home opener, and both players and fans alike showed up to the game with the energy of a three-toed sloth on vicodin.  Facing the fact that only five 0-3 teams have ever made the playoffs in the long history of the NFL, the Dolphins barely squeaked by a winless Titans franchise that featured a quarterback that got his first peek at the playbook on the eve of Week 1 when he was quickly signed and immediately declared the starter.  What is wrong with this picture?

Week 2 Bills Preview: Rebound or Regress?

Any time a team loses a game, there will be a million reasons why; a million fingers pointed in every direction, and a million areas that need improvement.  Had the Dolphins caught a little lucky break toward the end of the game and come out with the victory, the praise for beating the Super Bowl champs in their own house would be non-stop.  Had the Dolphins chosen to throw two little dinks into the end zone instead of running Ronnie toward the goal line, everyone would view Daunte Culpepper's evening from a completely different angle.  This all begs the question of which outcome was better for the team; a lucky win, or a sound defeat?

Fortune smiled on the Dolphins when Pittsburgh coach Bill Cowher announced that Super Bowl-winning quarterback Ben Roethlisberger would miss the season opener after surgery to remove his appendix.  It turns out that smile was the sadistic grin of a 10 year old with a magnifying glass poised over an anthill.  After battling tough with the Steelers for 54 minutes, the Dolphins raised the white flag with a number of unforced errors and miscues during the final 6 minutes of the contest.  The score, 28-17 Steelers, is a fair indication of how the team fared during the game.

The Dolphins' backups finished up the team's preseason efforts by pasting the Rams' backups in a meaningless yet highly entertaining game.  The team has since made their final cuts; streamlining the roster in preparation for the regular season.  Meanwhile, the Steelers have announced that, due to emergency appendectomy surgery, Ben Roethlisberger will miss the team's Week 1 outing against the Dolphins.

  Preseason Wrap-Up; Cuts Looming

The Miami Dolphins have wrapped up their meaningful preseason efforts this week with a 19-10 loss to the Carolina Panthers at Bank of America Stadium.  There is one preseason game left on the schedule which pits Nick Saban against his former offensive coordinator Scott Linehan at Dolphin Stadium, however the fourth and final preseason game of the year is often viewed as an afterthought.  The first string players barely dress for the game and, if they play at all, they generally play a single series or less.  As we head into the first cut date, when the team will be asked to pare down the roster to 65 players that were not allocated to NFL Europe (the team receives a roster exemption for allocated players until the final cut date), we can take a closer look at some of the trends displayed by the team during the preseason.

There are a lot of known commodities when it comes to evaluating NFL talent, but there is always interest in looking out for the unknown guy that hits you unexpectedly like a hard right hook from a southpaw.  As keeper of the Dolphin chronicles here at AFC East Report, I thought I would clue readers in on which Dolphins stand the greatest chance of making waves that resound throughout the league.
